Junior String Orchestra

Director/Conductor: Mrs P Else.
11.00am – 12.30pm St. Robert’s school hall (access from the rear, left hand side)


The Junior Strings consists of 50 – 60 young players. For many new members it will be their first experience of large ensemble work, so we aim to introduce them to new orchestral skills whilst reinforcing playing techniques.


Entry to the orchestra is by teacher recommendation, but players would normally be of a pre grade 1 standard and this level is recommended to all string players at this level.

Junior Concert Band

Director/Conductor: Mr O James.
9.30am – 11:00am St. Robert’s school hall.


The Junior Concert Band provides elementary ensemble experience for the young player. For many, this will be their first experience of playing as part of a large ensemble.


An impressive and well-balanced ensemble, the entry level is about Grade 1 standard. New members are most welcome.


During the summer the ensemble is in demand at garden parties and fetes.

 

HYPE

Director: Mrs. Cherry Bratkowski
10.00am – 11.00am Near the Lower School Hall.


Hype is a newly established percussion group, established to encourage young, hopeful percussionists a chance to develop rhythm and reading skills which will enable them to fully benefit from playing in ensembles, either throughout the centre or in school or other groups.


The ensemble caters for pupils who have just started to learn percussion and wish to play in a group to develop ensemble experience and meet like minded people!

 

Guitar Group

Director: Mr Michael Waterhouse.
9.30am – 11.00am Lower School.


The Guitar Group has a membership of students with a wide range of experience. The ensemble plays a varied repertoire- some of it arranged specifically for them by their director.


A minimum standard for new members is that grade work should at least be begun.

 

 

 

Intermediate Concert Band

Director / Conductor: Miss Alexis Cairns.
9.30am – 12.30pm Community Centre Hall.

The band is commonly 50 strong and provides a rich variety of musical experience in the grade 3 to 5 plus range, from traditional and modern wind and concert band music to pop/rock arrangements and medleys from musical shows. The band takes part in festivals and performs regularly in the local community and is great training for players wishing to access the higher level ensembles.
Because the band performs concerts at least five or six times a year, members need to be committed to attending regularly and supporting the ensemble for concerts, the dates of which are given well in advance.


The entry requirement is approximately grade 4 standard and entry to it is by teacher recommendation normally given during the last half of the summer term.

 

Intermediate Symphony Orchestra

Director/Conductor: Amanda Crawley 9.30am – 12.30am
Harrogate High School Music Block.


ISO consists of about 30 members ranging in level from about Grade 3 to Grade 5.
The orchestra plays a varied mixture of classical music, pop and film music arrangements. The players are encouraged to experience a wide variety of musical styles in an enjoyable and stimulating environment.


Entrance to the ensemble is by teacher recommendation, generally given in the last half of the summer term, and to outside players who are grade 3 to 5 standard.

Harrogate Youth Jazz Orchestra(HYJO)

Director/Conductor.: Mr J Williamson


9.30am – 12.30 pm Harrogate High School Youth Centre


HYJO is a senior ensemble offering opportunities to those students who wish to explore jazz technique and repertoire. The band plays from a large library of music ranging from traditional big band numbers to more contemporary music.
HYJO regularly perform concerts throughout the year and have had the privilege of being chosen to work with Julian Joseph as part of BBC’s Music Live Festival. They have also recently recorded their first album- ‘Jazz Police’ (copies still available on inquiry to the office) and have worked with Annie Whitehead and her quartet.


The ensemble consists of about 20 members, with a keen interest in jazz and rock music. New members need to have some experience of improvisation although this will be taught as part of rehearsals.


Entry is by audition with an entry level of about Grade 7/8 being required.

Blast Off!

Director/Conductor: Mr Stephen Price


9.30am – 10:45am
Music Block

This is a brand new band.


It is suitable for all woodwind and brass players who have either just started learning or have had lessons for about a year.


Blast Off! will play music tailored to the abilities of the children who turn up and serve as an introduction to playing in an ensemble as well as addressing some of the basic skills of playing a wind instrument.

 


Harrogate and Skipton Area Concert Band (HASCB)

Director/Conductor: Mr D Else
9.30am – 11:00am Lower School Hall.


The HASCB, or Area Band as it is more often referred to, is a full symphonic wind band playing from the enormous range of music written for such an ensemble. They are regularly invited to perform in the local community as well as taking part in National Festivals.


Over the years, Area Band has consistently reached very high standards of playing, performing in the National Concert Band Festival and the finals of the National Festival of Music For Youth at Symphony Hall, Birmingham.
The band looks forward to another successful year.


A full commitment to the band is essential, with regular attendance to rehearsals and concerts.


Entry is by playing audition, members needing to be at least Grade 5 standard.

From September 2011, this will meet until 11:00.

 

Harrogate Youth Strings (HYS)

HYS ensemble director: Teresa Crick 9:30 – 11:00

This ensemble enables students who are of a more advanced standard to experience the wealth of string orchestra repertoire that exists. It lasts for the first half of the morning, after which the students will play in the, also newly formed, Harrogate Youth Concert Orchestra

Harrogate Youth Concert Orchestra (HYCO)

Director/Conductor: Mr D Else
11:00am - 12:30pm Lower School Hall.

This new ensemble is designed to give students the opportunity to experience playing in a full symphonic ensemble which will play works selected from past and contemporary composers.

A full commitment to the band is essential, with regular attendance to rehearsals and concerts.


Entry is by playing audition, members needing to be at least Grade 5 standard.
